The college indoor season is getting started now, so I think it’s about time to post some more college tracks. I’m going to go to the Horizon League for the next series. Located in the upper midwest, there is a definite need for indoor tracks here, but there are also some nice outdoor facilities in this conference as well. I’m going to start with the track at Titan Field, found on the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy. The home of the Titans is basically an entirely new facility the was completed in 2007, replacing a grass field that was here prior to that. They now have a new black track and article turf infield. There are a couple of things about this new track that are puzzling me. Detroit Mercy’s school colors are red and blue. Either of those colors would have been a much better choice for the track than black. And even more puzzling is the choice to build this track with only six lanes. As you can see in the overhead view, there is plenty of space here, so it’s not like that was limited and they had to build a small track. There is room for a 10-lane track here is they wanted it. Seems very strange for a D1 college program. The Titans have hosted meets here in the past, but nothing is on the schedule for this year. On a personal note, and student of mine has committed to playing lacrosse here, so he will actually be using this field.
