The Soccer and Track & Field Complex at the University of Northern Illinois is next in the Mid-American Conference track series. This facility for the Huskies women’s track & field team was built fairly recently, opening in 2008, with the first track season being in the spring of 2009. This is an 8-lane track, with a lot of the synthetic surface installed to include the horizontal jumps outside the west straight and both D-zones. All throws are outside in the field area south of the track. Lights were added last year allowing for evening meets (and soccer games). Even though this is a new facility, the Huskies last held a meet here in 2011, when they hosted the MAC outdoor championship meet.
On a personal note, over the past 15 years, I’ve had three former student/athletes of mine go on to play football for the Huskies, and I work with another teacher/coach who also played there, so NIU is a school that I have followed a little more closely than others. And being a big University of Minnesota Golden Gopher fan, I was happy to see the football team hire Jerry Kill as the new head coach, who happened to come from Northern Illinois. I’m really excited for their fans and the season they are having this fall.
Here’s a video of the very first practice on this new track:
