Hampden Park – Glasgow, Scotland

Hampden ParkThe Commonwealth Games officially started a few days ago, but tomorrow is the first day of competition for athletics.  It is being held at today’s track at Hampden Park, a stadium with a long history in the sporting world.  The original stadium on this site opened in 1903, and at the time was the largest in the world with seating for over 100,000 people.  Later, it was expanded even more to accommodate 150,000 people.  The stadium has since been completely rebuilt and now is used primarily for soccer, with seating for just over 52,000.  This year however, it underwent an amazing renovation to allow for the track installation for the Commonwealth Games.  They had to actually raise the floor up 1.9 meters, to allow for the extra space required for the track.  Seating for athletics now is at 44,000.  There is also a new warm-up track located outside the stadium.  You can watch a video of this incredible transformation below:
