This past weekend, I was up at my family’s cabin which is just north of Ely, Minnesota. It is located very close to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, near the Canadian border. While Ely High School has a track & field team, they do not have an actual track. So as we were driving home, I started wondering where the closest track to Ely is. After some research, it turns out that the closest all-weather track is located about an hour away, at Virginia High School, and it is today’s featured track. This looks like your typical Minnesota high school black track. They has eight full lanes here, with all field events except for the discus located on the inside. It’s kind of interesting to see the high jump and pole vault runways in basically the same area. I wonder if this causes the high jumpers to shorten their approach so they aren’t crossing in front of the vaulters.
