Happy Halloween! In the spirit of this holiday, I am going to Salem, MA for today’s track. Another one of my favorite TV shows right now is “American Horror Story” and this season it has a witch story-line, and there have been references to the Salem witch trials in the episodes so far. So Salem it is and the track at Bertram Field, which is used by Salem High School. In the past, I have posted a few tracks at high schools in unique locations or unique towns, where they had a great opportunity with their choice of school mascot and totally blew it (i.e. the North Pole Patriots). Salem High School however has embraced their history and chosen the best possible mascot for their sports teams – the Witches! Kudos to you Salem High School!
The track itself is small, but typical for New England. It has four full lanes, but six on the straight for sprints, but is only 370 meters. Another interesting aspect is the high jump area. Rather than placing it inside the track on one of the curves, this one has its own separate area, outside and away from the track completely, and behind the bleachers. There are also two long/triple jump runways, but they only have one pit, and it’s on the same end for both. You would think one would be different, or a pit on both ends for wind adjustments. However, the good news is that a renovation is going on right now, with an artificial turf infield as well as an expanded track! If fact, it is scheduled to be completed tomorrow. A slight delay in the completion has caused some scheduling issues, but I’m sure they will be very happy when its done a ready to use.
Happy Halloween to the Salem Witches and everyone else!
