Kuhlman Field – Edina, MN

Kuhlman FieldToday I am going to go away from the high school state championship tracks for a moment to post a track here in Minnesota, just to let people know what we are dealing with this spring.  A friend of mine sent me this photo of the track at Kuhlman Field in Edina where he lives and trains.  And yes this was taken yesterday afternoon, April 18th!  At myEdina school, all after-school activities and practices were canceled yesterday.  We got about 4″ more overnight, and many schools have a two-hour late start this morning (not us though, unfortunately).

In all my years coaching, this is the worst spring I have ever seen.  Here is a summary of our athletics calendar so far in Farmington.  It’s crazy.  Baseball has had one game, because it was played at the Metrodome.  Softball and golf still won’t be playing for weeks now.  We are fortunate enough to have artificial turf, so lacrosse has had one game, but they did have to shovel some snow to get it outside one sideline.  It was played in the wind and rain with a game temp after school of 36-degrees.  Nothing yet for girls lacrosse.  Track has had two meets, one of which was this week because Rosemount High School shoveled their track.  A lot of school haven’t had any meets yet.  Next week will be the 7th week of the season, and with temps staying in the 40’s for next week, it still looks bad.  Section meets to qualify for state are only six weeks away.  And the northern half of the state is even worse off than we are.  This is just unbelievable!  If it’s not snowing, its cold and raining.  So if you aren’t seeing any great high school track performances coming from Minnesota, you now know why.  We haven’t even really started yet and the season’s half over.  Frustrating…
