Today’s track is one of my personal favorites – Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University. I was fortunate enough to race on this track when I was in college (a long time ago). My coach had a connection to the Raleigh-Durham area, so we traveled out here from Minnesota over spring break to compete at the Duke Invitational. It also happened to be the week before the Final Four, a pretty exciting time in this part of the country! We got to see the send-off for the basketball team, and heard Coach K speak to the crowd before getting on the bus to leave. It was something that I’ll never forget, and I have been a Duke fan ever since. (The Blue Devils lost to Kansas who then beat Oklahoma for the title.)
Our Team USA member today is 1500m runner, and former Blue Devil, Shannon Rowbury. She ran very well in London through both qualifying rounds, and then into the final finishing 6th, just a second behind gold medalist Cakir Alptekin (insert your doping comment here). It was a very exciting race.
*One interesting note about the stadium. Being from Minnesota, I’m a BigTen fan and always watch the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl game was actually held here during World War II, in 1942, the only time it hasn’t been played in Pasadena.
