Olympic Stadium – Helsinki, Finland

Olympic Stadium in Helsinki was the venue for track and field at the 1952 Summer Olympic Games.  It was originally built for the 1940 Olympics, which were later cancelled due to World War II.  Olympia Stadion owns a bit history in that it was the first site for the World Championships, which started in 1983.  One other interesting thing that I happened to come across is that Helsinki beat out the Minneapolis bid to host the 1952 games.  I currently live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and didn’t know that they even bid on these games, although the final vote wasn’t even close.
