The Olympic Games are now officially over, but the Olympic feeling still lingers, so I am going to continue with the theme for a little while longer. Today however, instead of looking into the past at previous Olympic venues, I’m providing a little glimpse into the future. Today’s track will be our focus four years from now, for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.
Estádio Olímpico João Havelange will be the site for track and field. It was built in 2007 and is used mainly for soccer. It will be one of the venues of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Seating capacity will be increased to 60,000 for the Olympics. One interesting note, the opening and closing ceremonies will not be held here. Those will be at Estádio do Maracanã, the soccer venue, with a capacity of over 82,000 seats.
