The most obvious post ever. Opening ceremonies are today! Let the excitement begin. But those of us who are track & field fans have to wait another week until August 3rd, when the best sport starts. In the meantime, I do have one recommendation. Check out weightlifting. I coached competitive weightlifting for eight years at the high school level, and found a lot of similarities to coaching field events. I have always told people that it would be like combining the distances of the shot put and discus together for a total, but you are competing against people your own size.
Unfortunately Team USA only has three athletes in London who will be lifting, so not much will be shown on TV. You’ll have to go to the live streaming. There is no excuse why the US shouldn’t dominate this sport, but we are just an after thought at the world level. Nice work USA Weightlifting. (I could go on a rant here, but will save it for another time.) It also won’t be televised because no one in our country really even knows what the sport is. Again, way to go USA Weightlifting. I know people complain about USATF as an organization, but you have no idea how well it’s run compared to the screwed up mess that is USAW.
Anyway, enough of that for now. Weightlifting starts tomorrow, with medals awarded each day, and wraps up on August 7th. The lightest weight classes are first, with the heaviest classes on the last day. These are really some incredible athletes, and I know you will be amazed at what they can do. Check it out!
