With the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games tomorrow, today will be my last Team USA preview post. And with that we wrap things up with those team members who attended the University of Oregon and called Hayward Field their home. The list of Ducks is both extensive and impressive.
On the men’s side, we have new decathlon world record holder Ashton Eaton. At the trials, Eaton scored 9039 points, to break the previous WR by 13 points! Galen Rupp will be running the 5k and 10k, after winning both races at the Olympic trials. Rupp has been running really well, and I’m excited to see him race against the best in the world. In the 1500m, both Matt Centrowitz and Andrew Wheating will be representing the US. And in the javelin, Cyrus Hostetler qualified for his first Olympic team.
And on the women’s side, we have another first time Team USA javelin thrower in Rachel Yurkovich. And in the pole vault, Becky Holliday who finished runner-up at the trials and qualified for her first Olympic team as well.
Eugene isn’t nicknamed “Tracktown” for no reason. And these are just the former Ducks who are part of Team USA. Many of the other members I have previously posted live and train in Eugene as well. While I have never been to Hayward Field myself yet, it is definitely on the top of my bucket list for places to race. Someday…
